b1de1e7a77 Extract core part of smartlist code into its own library.
The smartlist_core library now contains only the parts of smartlists
that are needed for the logging library. This resolves the
circularity between "container" and "log".

The "containers" library still uses the logging code, and has the
higher-level smartlist functions.

79f73ab330 Finally extract the log library and make it build.
This patch:
  - introduces an fdio module for low-level fd functions that don't
    need to log.
  - moves the responsibility for opening files outside of torlog.c,
so it won't need to call tor_open_cloexec.

The locking code gets its own module, since it's more fundamental

build: Add make clippy option for Rust linting.
Note that clippy is quite loud/obnoxious, as its name would imply.
This target isn't meant to run on CI, or even necessarily exit
cleanly. It's merely a way for developers to check if they've made
any glaring mistakes, or done awkward things they might not have
otherwise realised. We *can* configure it to be quieter in the
future, but it's probably not worth rabbitholing on.

70c067102b Allow Rust build using locally supplied crates or crates.io
This adds a couple of configure commands to control whether we're
requiring all dependencies to be available locally (default) or not

the RUST_DEPENDENCIES variable to point to the local repository of
crates. This also adds src/ext/rust as a git submodule that contains
such a local repository for easy setup.

3ac434104a Fix test-network-all target in out-of-tree builds
The test-network-all target assumes the test-driver script lives in the
current working directory. This assumption breaks out-of-tree builds
because it actually lives in the source directory.

Automake 1.12 introduces `LOG_DRIVER` which defines the location of the
test driver script. Because Tor still supports Automake 1.11 we use the
default value of this variable directly. The default value uses the
configured shell for calling the test driver script and explicitly
prefixes the source directory.

ce854a8d22 Add -ftrapv to gcc-hardening ... mostly!
We know there are overflows in curve25519-donna-c32, so we'll have
to have that one be fwrapv.

Only apply the asan, ubsan, and trapv options to the code that does
not need to run in constant time. Those options introduce branches
to the code they instrument.

(These introduced branches should never actually be taken, so it
might _still_ be constant time after all, but branch predictors are
complicated enough that I'm not really confident here. Let's aim for
safety.)

CentOS 6 is roughly the oldest thing we care about developers still

older than openssl 1.0.0, so anybody who can't upgrade past those
probably can't upgrade to a modern openssl either. And since only
people building from git or editing configure.ac/Makefile.am need to
use autotools, I'm not totally enthused about keeping support for
old ones anyway.

- Don't try to rm -rf the directory before we start: somebody might
have set it to ~, which would be quite sad.

 - Always quote the directory name

 - Use 'make reset-gcov' before running tests.

 - Use 'make check', not ./src/test/test

17e9fc09c3 Coverage support: build with --enable-coverage to have tests run with gcov
If you pass the --enable-coverage flag on the command line, we build
our testing binaries with appropriate options eo enable coverage
testing. We also build a "tor-cov" binary that has coverage enabled,
for integration tests.

On recent OSX versions, test coverage only works with clang, not gcc.
So we warn about that.

Also add a contrib/coverage script to actually run gcov with the
appropriate options to generate useful .gcov files. (Thanks to
automake, the .o files will not have the names that gcov expects to
find.)

Also, remove generated gcda and gcno files on clean.

Stewart Smith
2a4a149624 Move to non-recursive make
This gives us a few benefits:
1) make -j clean all
this will start working, as it should. It currently doesn't.
2) increased parallel build
recursive make will max out at number of files in a directory,
   non-recursive make doesn't have such a limitation
3) Removal of duplicate information in make files,
   less error prone

I've also slightly updated how we call AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE, as the way
that was used was not only deprecated but will be *removed* in the next
major automake release (1.13).... so probably best that we can continue
to bulid tor without requiring old automake.
(see http://www.gnu.org/software/automake/manual/html_node/Public-Macros.html )

We'll still need to tweak it so that it looks for includes and

so that it's a bit documented; and so that we actually try running
the output.

Work done with Erinn Clark.

223fc208f6 Split long lines in configure.in and Makefile.am files
Having very long single lines with lots and lots of things in them
tends to make files hard to diff and hard to merge. Since our tools
are one-line-at-a-time, we should try to construct lists that way too,
within reason.

This incidentally turned up a few headers in configure.in that we were
for some reason searching for twice.

We decided to no longer ship expert packages for OS X because they're a
lot of trouble to keep maintained and confuse users. For those who want

The polipo stuff that is still required for the Vidalia bundle build can

d4b54549b8 Refactor unit tests to use the tinytest framework.
"Tinytest" is a minimalist C unit testing framework I wrote for
Libevent. It supports some generally useful features, like being able
to run separate unit tests in their own processes.

I tried to do the refactoring to change test.c as little as possible.
Thus, we mostly don't call the tinytest macros directly. Instead, the
test.h header is now a wrapper on tinytest.h to make our existing
test_foo() macros work.

The next step(s) here will be:
  - To break test.c into separate files, each with its own test group.
  - To look into which things we can test
  - To refactor the more fiddly tests to use the tinytest macros
    directly and/or run forked.
  - To see about writing unit tests for things we couldn't previously
    test without forking.
