We separate v4 and v6 because we often use an IPv4 address represented with
a uint32_t instead of a tor_addr_t.
This will be used to also add the trusted directory addresses taken from the
configuration.
The trusted directories from the consensus are already added to the address
set from their descriptor.

That function is only used to test the global bucket write limit for a
directory connection.
It should _not_ be used for anything else since that function looks to see if
we are a directory authority.
Rename it to something more meaningful. No change in behavior at this commit,
only renaming.

clang-format sometimes thinks that "#name" should be written as
"# name" if it appears at the start of a line. Using () appears
to suppress this, while confusing Coccinelle.
Doing this makes our macro usage a little clear IMO, and also avoids
having to use an unadorned "new" within a macro. (Clang-format
seems to think that "new" means we're doing C++, and so it generates
some output that checkSpace.pl doesn't care for.)

When we added the ACTIVE and DORMANT virtual signals, we taught the
signal command to handle them, but we didn't teach SIGNAL event to
report them.
To solve this problem and prevent it from recurring, this patch
revises the implementation of control_event_signal() to use the same
signal_table that handle_control_signal() uses. This way, the two
controller commands can't become out of sync.
Fixes bug 33104; bugfix on 0.4.0.1-alpha.
Now we use the exact same INTRO2 decrypt logic regardless of whether the
service is an OB instance or not.
The new get_subcredential_for_handling_intro2_cell() function is responsible
for loading the right subcredentials in either case.
This approach saves us a pair of curve25519 operations for every
subcredential but the first. It is not yet constant-time.
I've noted a few places where IMO we should refactor the code so
that the complete list of subcredentials is passed in earlier.
At this commit, the service reads the config file and parse it to finally set

The hs_parse_address() can not be used without an options_t object existing
since on error it uses the escaped_safe_str() that looks at the options.

To make Tor still work, we define a minimal dircache_stub.c file
that defines the entry points to the module that can actually be
seen by the compiler when we're building with dircache and relay
disabled.
This function had some XXX comments indicating (correctly) that it
was not actually used by the dirserver code, and that only the
controller still used it.
We already check if there are invalid values in
check_bridge_distribution_setting() and reject the value if that is the
case. We can therefore only have strings of [A-Z] | [a-z] | [0-9] | '-'
| '_' here which is according to the directory specification.

This patch makes sure we lowercase the value of BridgeDistribution

This patch makes sure that we accept values such as "nOne", "None", and
"AnY" as valid values for BridgeDistribution. We later ensure to
lower-case the values before they are forwarded to the BridgeDB.
See: https://bugs.torproject.org/32753
When the BridgeDistribution value was added in commit
ebab521525 the check for whether the value
contains '\n' or '\r' was added as a requirement for whether or not the
value should be escaped.
This patch removes this check and makes sure we call `escaped()` on the
value every time before we add it to a descriptor.
See: https://bugs.torproject.org/32753
We hit this assertion with bug 32868, but I'm stymied figuring out
how we wound up with a routerstatus like this. This patch is a
diagnostic to attempt to figure out what is going on, and to avoid a
crash in the meantime.
When looking up an entry in the rend_cache, stop asserting that it exists but
rather confirm it exists and if not, return that no entry was found.
The reason for that is because the hs_circ_cleanup_on_free() function (which
can end up looking at the rend_cache) can be called from the
circuit_free_all() function that is called _after_ the rend cache is cleaned
up in tor_free_all().
We could fix the free all ordering but then it will just hide a future bug.
Instead, handle a missing rend_cache as a valid use case as in while we are in
the cleanup process.
As Tor becomes more modular, it is getting more and more difficult to ensure
subsystem callstack ordering thus this fix aims at making the HSv2 subsystem
more robust at being called while tor is pretty much in any kind of state.

Some ".c" files define *_PRIVATE macros, but those macros are
not used in any header file. Delete them.
These changes were created using the "make autostyle" from
32522, and then split into commits.
I've chosen the "AuthDirMaxServersPerAddr" option here for
simplicity, since it is used literally nowhere else besides the dirauth
module. Once we have all the infrastructure in place for this, we
can move more options into this structure.
These modules are only built when the selected modules are disabled.
The provide stub implementations of the subsystem blocks. Later,
other stub implementations could move here.
Having real subsystem blocks here will let us handle disabled
configuration options better.
With v3, the "pending_final_cpath" of a circuit is always NULL which means
that for v3, established client rendezvous circuit waiting for the intro point
to ACK, will always end up timing out quickly.
This can increase the delays to which you connect to a service since in order
to succeed, the rendezvous circuit needs to fully established
(CIRCUIT_PURPOSE_C_REND_JOINED) within the cutoff of the introduction circuit
as well which is these days around 2-3 seconds.

- Remove key_dir which is useless.
- Kill an indentation layer.
We want to make it cleaner and slimmer so that we can reuse parts of it in the
REMOVE command for removing the right client auth file.
Because the function that parses client auth credentials saved on
disk (parse_auth_file_content()) is not future compatible, there is no way to
add support for storing the nickname on the disk. Hence, nicknames cannot
persist after Tor restart making them pretty much useless.
In the future we can introduce nicknames by adding a new file format for client
auth credentials, but this was not deemed worth doing at this stage.
- See hs_client_register_auth_credentials() for the entry point.
- Also set the permanent flag for credentials we read from the filesystem.
- Also add some missing documentation.
Since the removal of ip->circuit_established, this function does litterally
nothing so clean it up.

By centralizing the circuit cleanup type that is: on close, free and
repurpose, some actions on the circuit can not happen for a certain cleanup
type or for all types.
This passes a cleanup type so the HS subsystem (v2 and v3) can take actions
based on the type of cleanup.
For instance, there is slow code that we do not run on a circuit close but
rather only on free.

Refactor to decomplexify circuit_about_to_free() and finally have one single

In our old design, we had to declare configuration structures (like
or_options_t) and variable tables (like option_vars_) separately,
and we used some magic to enforce their consistency (see
conftesting.h).
With this design, we write a single definition for the configuration
object and its fields, and use C macros to expand it either into a
structure, or a variable table. Since they are both made from the
same source, they can't become inconsistent.
The two designs can coexist happily, and we can migrate from one to
the other at our convenience.

hs_client_purge_state() and hs_cache_clean_as_client() can remove a descriptor
from the client cache with a NEWNYM or simply when the descriptor expires.
Which means that for an INTRO circuit being established during that time, once
it opens, we lookup the descriptor to get the IP object but hey surprised, no
more descriptor.
The approach here is minimalist that is accept the race and close the circuit
since we can not continue. Before that, the circuit would stay opened and the
client wait the SockTimeout.

HTTPSProxy, Socks4Proxy, or Socks5Proxy because they all have standard
URI schemes.
In case of error, a negative value will be returned or NULL written into
first supplied argument.
This patch uses both cases to comply with style in the specific files.
A tor_vasprintf error in process_vprintf would lead to a NULL dereference
later on in buf_add, because the return value -1 casted to size_t would
pass an assertion check inside of buf_add.
On the other hand, common systems will fail on such an operation, so it
is not a huge difference to a simple assertion. Yet it is better to
properly fail instead of relying on such behaviour on all systems.

When encoding introduction points, we were not checking if that intro points
had an established circuit.
When botting up, the service will pick, by default, 3 + 2 intro points and the
first 3 that establish, we use them and upload the descriptor.
However, the intro point is removed from the service descriptor list only when
the circuit has opened and we see that we have already enough intro points, it
is then removed.
But it is possible that the service establishes 3 intro points successfully
before the other(s) have even opened yet.
This lead to the service encoding extra intro points in the descriptor even
though the circuit is not opened or might never establish (#31561).

This code is logically independent of the rest of the function, and
goes better in its own function.
This is almost purely code movement; I suggest reviewing with
--color-moved.
Our dimap code asserts if you try to add the same key twice; this
can't happen if everything is running smoothly, but it's possible if
you try to start a relay where secret_onion_key_ntor is the same as
secret_onion_key_ntor.old.
Fixes bug 30916; bugfix on 0.2.4.8-alpha when ntor keys were
introduced.
We have code in microdescs_parse_from_string() to record the digests
of microdescriptors that we could not parse. But right now, that
code looks at the md->digest field, which is a bit inelegant, and
will stand in the way of sensible refactoring.
Instead, use a local variable to hold the digest.
When tor is missing descriptors for some primary entry guards, make the
log message less alarming. It's normal for descriptors to expire, as long
as tor fetches new ones soon after.
Fixes bug 31657; bugfix on 0.3.3.1-alpha.
This fixes LTO compilation for Android and -O0 compilation in
general, when --disable-module-dirauth is provided.
Fixes bug 31552; bugfix on 0.4.1.1-alpha.
Rewrite format_node_description() and router_get_verbose_nickname() to
use strlcpy() and strlcat(). The previous implementation used memcpy()
and pointer arithmetic, which was error-prone.
Closes ticket 31545. This is CID 1452819.
These functions are all used to implement the ROUTERSET_type_defn
object, which maps strings to and from routerset_t configuration
variables for the configuration module.
routerset_t has two representations of an empty routerset: NULL, and
a set containing no elements. But some of our config code assumes
that empty routersets are represented as NULL. So let's give it
what it assumes.
Fixes bug 31495. Bugfix on e16b90b88a76; but not in any released
Tor.
The right way to free a config object is now to wrap config_free(),
always. Instead of creating an alternative free function, objects
should provide an alternative clear callback to free any fields that
the configuration manager doesn't manage.
This lets us simplify our code a little, and lets us extend the
confparse.c code to manage additional fields in config_free.
Move everything to its own function in order to better log, document and tests
the introduction point validation process.

enabled flag and not only the token bucket.

Remove the public functions returning the HS DoS consensus param or default
values as it is exclusively used internally now.
Rename the param_* variables to consensus_param_* for better code semantic.
Finally, make some private functions available to unit tests.

This commit makes it that the hs_dos.c file only uses the consensus parameter
variables set when we initialize and when the consensus changes.
There is no need to call each time networkstatus_get_param(), which is
expensive, when we want access to a consensus value.

A bit cleaner especially that the next commit(s) will make the consensus param
interface private to hs_dos.c so we expose as little as we can outside of the
subsystem.

This commit makes tor add the DoS cell extension to the ESTABLISH_INTRO cell
if the defense is enabled on the service side with a torrc option.
Furthermore, the cell extension is only added if the introduction point
supports it. The protover version HSIntro=5 is looked for.

Make it clear that these functions return the consensus param only.
Introduction point can not set those values with a torrc option.

Previously, v3 single onion services failed when all intro nodes were
unreachable via a 1-hop path. Now, we select intros that are only available
via a 3-hop path, and use a 3-hop path to connect to them.
Fixes bug 23507; bugfix on 0.3.2.1-alpha.
Previously, we used a 1-hop path when a single onion rend failed
immediately, and a 3-hop path when it failed after trying to build
a circuit.
Fixes bug 23818; bugfix on 0.3.2.1-alpha.
In case the consensus parameters for the rate/burst changes, we need to update
all already established introduction circuits to the newest value.
This commit introduces a "get all intro circ" function from the HS circuitmap
(v2 and v3) so it can be used by the HS DoS module to go over all circuits and
adjust the INTRODUCE2 token bucket parameters.

This commit add the hs_dos.{c|h} file that has the purpose of having the
anti-DoS code for onion services.
At this commit, it only has one which is a function that decides if an
INTRODUCE2 can be sent on the given introduction service circuit (S<->IP)
using a simple token bucket.
The rate per second is 25 and allowed burst to 200.

Now that we have a reasonable implementation for overriding the
default options for TestingTorNetwork, we don't need to modify
config_var_t structs any more. And therefore, we can have constant
format options, like reasonable people.
It's important to make sure that we don't change a config_mgr_t
after we start using it to make objects, or we could get into
inconsistent states. This feature is the start of a safety
mechanism to prevent this problem.
Remember that our goal in the present refactoring is to allow each
subsystem to declare its own configuration structure and
variables. To do this, each module will get its own
config_format_t, and so we'll want a different structure that wraps
several config_format_t objects. This is a "config_mgr_t".
This shouldn't be possible while Tor is running, but the tests can
hit this code. Rather than force the tests to add a dummy channel
object, let's just tolerate their incompletely built circuits.
There is other code that uses this value, and some of it is
apparently reachable from inside router_dir_info_changed(), which
routerlist_free() apparently calls. (ouch!) This is a minimal fix
to try to resolve the issue without causing other problems.
Fixes bug 31003. I'm calling this a bugfix on 0.1.2.2-alpha, where
the call to router_dir_info_changed() was added to routerlist_free().
Fix add_onion_helper_clientauth() and add_onion_helper_keyarg() to
explicitly call the appropriate control reply abstractions instead of
allocating a string to pass to their callers.

Always publish bridge pluggable transport information in the extra info
descriptor, even if ExtraInfoStatistics is 0. This information is
needed by BridgeDB.
Fixes bug 30956; bugfix on 0.4.1.1-alpha.
This will effectively also deny any bridge to be used as a single hop to the
introduction point since bridge do not authenticate like clients.

When we consider all circuits in "waiting for guard" state to be promoted to
an "open" state, we were considering all circuits, even the one marked for
close.
This ultiamtely triggers a "circuit_has_opened()" called on the circuit that
is marked for close which then leads to possible undesirable behaviors within
a subsystem.
For instance, the HS subsystem would be unable to find the authentication key
of the introduction point circuit leading to a BUG() warning and a duplicate
mark for close on the circuit.
This commit also adds a unit test to make sure we never select marked for
close circuits when upgrading its guard state from waiting for guard to open.

Adds ROUTER_AUTHDIR_BUG_ANNOTATIONS to was_router_added_t.

When this function was implemented, it counted all the entry guards
in the bridge set. But this included previously configured bridges,
as well as currently configured ones! Instead, only count the
_filtered_ bridges (ones that are configured and possibly reachable)
as maybe usable.

This is the first half of implementing proposal 301. The
RecommendedPackages torrc option is marked as obsolete and
the test cases for the option removed. Additionally, the code relating
to generating and formatting package lines in votes is removed.
These lines may still appear in votes from other directory authorities
running earlier versions of the code and so consensuses may still
contain package lines. A new consensus method will be needed to stop
including package lines in consensuses.

To ease debugging of miscount issues, attach vanguards with --loglevel DEBUG
and obtain control port logs (or use any other control port CIRC and
CIRC_MINOR event logging mechanism).
If circuit padding wants to keep a circuit open and pathbias used to ignore
it, pathbias should continue to ignore it.
This may catch other purpose-change related miscounts (such as timeout
measurement, cannibalization, onion service circuit transitions, and
vanguards).
Fortunately, in 0.3.5.1-alpha we improved logging for various
failure cases involved with onion service client auth.
Unfortunately, for this one, we freed the file right before logging
its name.
Fortunately, tor_free() sets its pointer to NULL, so we didn't have
a use-after-free bug.
Unfortunately, passing NULL to %s is not defined.
Fortunately, GCC 9.1.1 caught the issue!
Unfortunately, nobody has actually tried building Tor with GCC 9.1.1
before. Or if they had, they didn't report the warning.
Fixes bug 30475; bugfix on 0.3.5.1-alpha.
Some of these functions are now public and cpath-specific so their name should
signify the fact they are part of the cpath module:
assert_cpath_layer_ok -> cpath_assert_layer_ok
assert_cpath_ok -> cpath_assert_ok
onion_append_hop -> cpath_append_hop
circuit_init_cpath_crypto -> cpath_init_circuit_crypto
circuit_free_cpath_node -> cpath_free
onion_append_to_cpath -> cpath_extend_linked_list
We are using an opaque pointer so the structure needs to be allocated on the
heap. This means we now need a constructor for crypt_path_t.
Also modify all places initializing a crypt_path_t to use the constructor.
For various reasons, this was a nontrivial movement. There are
several places in the code where we do something like "update the
flags on this routerstatus or node if we're an authority", and at
least one where we pretended to be an authority when we weren't.
I don't believe any of these represent a real timing vulnerability
(remote timing against memcmp() on a modern CPU is not easy), but
these are the ones where I believe we should be more careful.
Manually fix up some reply-generating code that the Coccinelle scripts
won't match. Some more complicated ones remain -- these are mostly
ones that accumulate data to send, and then call connection_buf_add()
or connection_write_str_to_buf() directly.
Create a set of abstractions for controller commands and events to
output replies to the control channel. The control protocol has a
relatively consistent SMTP-like structure, so it's helpful when code
that implements control commands and events doesn't explicitly format
everything on its own.
Split the core reply formatting code out of control_fmt.c into
control_proto.c. The remaining code in control_format.c deals with
specific subsystems and will eventually move to join those subsystems.
When we tell the periodic event manager about an event, we are
"registering" that event. The event sits around without being
usable, however, until we "connect" the event to libevent. In the
end, we "disconnect" the event and remove its libevent parts.
Previously, we called these operations "add", "setup", and
"destroy", which led to confusion.
The nodelist_idx for each node_t serves as a unique identifier for
the node, so we can use a bitarray to hold all the excluded
nodes, and then remove them from the smartlist.
Previously use used smartlist_subtract(sl, excluded), which is
O(len(sl)*len(excluded)).
We can use this function in other places too, but this is the one
that showed up on the profiles of 30291.
Closes ticket 30307.
This command does not fit perfectly with the others, since its
second argument is optional and may contain equal signs. Still,
it's probably better to squeeze it into the new metaformat, since
doing so allows us to remove several pieces of the old
command-parsing machinery.
