96f1e69f24 Implement proposal 275: don't put "published" times in md consensus
When a new consensus method is negotiated, these values will all get
replaced with "2038-01-01 00:00:00".

This change should be safe because:

  * As of 0.2.9.11 / 0.3.0.7 / 0.3.1.1-alpha, Tor takes no action
about published_on times in the future.

  * The only remaining parties relying on published_on values are (we
believe) relays running 0.3.5.x, which rely on the values in a NS
consensus to see whether their descriptors are out of date. But
this patch only changes microdesc consensuses.

  * The latest Tor no longer looks at this field in consensuses.

Why make this change? In experiments, replacing these values with a
fixed value made the size of compressed consensus diffs much much
smaller. (Like, by over 50%!)

Implements proposal 275; Implements #40130.

5ad126a51b don't cache connect failures from our own circuits
The connect failure cache had a bad interaction with retrying connections
to our guards or bridges when we go offline and then come back online --
while offline we would fail to connect and cache this result, and then
when we return we would decline to even attempt to connect, because our
failure cache said it wouldn't work.

Now only cache connect failures for relays when we connected to them
because of somebody else's EXTEND request.

Fixes bug 40499; bugfix on 0.3.3.4-alpha.

cee6e7d9e1 Give an error message if LibreSSL's TLSv1.3 APIs aren't what we need
From LibreSSL versions 3.2.1 through 3.4.0, our configure script
would conclude that TLSv1.3 as supported, but it actually wasn't.
This led to annoying breakage like #40128 and #40445.

Now we give an error message if we try to build with one of those
versions.

Closes #40511.

c93114ec9e Prefer use of __MINGW_PRINTF/SCANF_FORMAT if available.
Mingw headers sometimes like to define alternative scanf/printf
format attributes depending on whether they're using clang, UCRT,
MINGW_ANSI_STDIO, or the microsoft version of printf/scanf. This
change attempts to use the right one on the given platform.

This is an attempt to fix part of #40355.

7084ec8710 don't retry entry guards if they're bridges without descriptors
When we don't yet have a descriptor for one of our bridges, disable
the entry guard retry schedule on that bridge. The entry guard retry
schedule and the bridge descriptor retry schedule can conflict,
e.g. where we mark a bridge as "maybe up" yet we don't try to fetch
its descriptor yet, leading Tor to wait (refusing to do anything)
until it becomes time to fetch the descriptor.

3c8510e2c0 reassess minimum-dir-info when a bridge fails
When we try to fetch a bridge descriptor and we fail, we mark
the guard as failed, but we never scheduled a re-compute for
router_have_minimum_dir_info().

So if we had already decided we needed to wait for this new descriptor,
we would just wait forever -- even if, counterintuitively, *losing* the
bridge is just what we need to *resume* using the network, if we had it
in state GUARD_REACHABLE_MAYBE and we were stalling to learn this outcome.

See bug 40396 for more details.

bcc953307b Move "Didn't recognize cell, but circ stops here" into heartbeat.
When we looked, this was the third most frequent message at
PROTOCOL_WARN, and doesn't actually tell us what to do about it.
Now:
 * we just log it at info
 * we log it only once per circuit
 * we report, in the heartbeat, how many times it happens, how many
cells it happens with per circuit, and how long these circuits
   have been alive (on average).

7a8108ea87 relay: Overload state on DNS timeout is now X% over Y secs
With this commit, we will only report a general overload state if we've
seen more than X% of DNS timeout errors over Y seconds. Previous
behavior was to report when a single timeout occured which is really too
small of a threshold.

The value X is a consensus parameters called
"overload_dns_timeout_scale_percent" which is a scaled percentage
(factor of 1000) so we can represent decimal points for X like 0.5% for
instance. Its default is 1000 which ends up being 1%.

The value Y is a consensus parameters called
"overload_dns_timeout_period_secs" which is the time period for which
will gather DNS errors and once over, we assess if that X% has been
reached ultimately triggering a general overload signal.

4046b9f3ee edge: Remove wrong bug warn when processing pending streams
The connection_ap_attach_pending() function processes all pending
streams in the pending_entry_connections list. It first copy the pointer
and then allocates a brand new empty list.

It then iterates over that copy pointer to try to attach entry
connections onto any fitting circuits using
connection_ap_handshake_attach_circuit().

That very function, for onion service, can lead to flagging _all_
streams of the same onion service to be put in state RENDDESC_WAIT from
CIRCUIT_WAIT. By doing so, it also tries to remove them from the
pending_entry_connections but at that point it is already empty.

Problem is that the we are iterating over the previous
pending_entry_connections which contains the streams that have just
changed state and are no longer in CIRCUIT_WAIT.

This lead to this bug warning occuring a lot on busy services:

  May 01 08:55:43.000 [warn] connection_ap_attach_pending(): Bug:
0x55d8764ae550 is no longer in circuit_wait. Its current state is
waiting for rendezvous desc. Why is it on pending_entry_connections?
  (on Tor 0.4.4.0-alpha-dev )

This fix is minimal and basically allow a state to be not CIRCUIT_WAIT
and move on to the next one without logging a warning. Because the
pending_entry_connections is emptied before processing, there is no
chance for a streams to be stuck there forever thus it is OK to ignore
streams not in the right state.

cac612af42 dir: Do not flag non-running failing HSDir
When a directory request fails, we flag the relay as non Running so we
don't use it anymore.

This can be problematic with onion services because there are cases
where a tor instance could have a lot of services, ephemeral ones, and
keeps failing to upload descriptors, let say due to a bad network, and
thus flag a lot of nodes as non Running which then in turn can not be
used for circuit building.

This commit makes it that we never flag nodes as non Running on a onion
service directory request (upload or fetch) failure as to keep the
hashring intact and not affect other parts of tor.

Fortunately, the onion service hashring is _not_ selected by looking at
the Running flag but since we do a 3-hop circuit to the HSDir, other
services on the same instance can influence each other by removing nodes
from the consensus for path selection.

This was made apparent with a small network that ran out of nodes to
used due to rapid succession of onion services uploading and failing.
See #40434 for details.

fe5a9db1e6 Disable ed25519-donna's batch verification.
Fixes bug 40078.

As reported by hdevalence our batch verification logic can cause an assert
crash.

The assert happens because when the batch verification of ed25519-donna fails,
the code in `ed25519_checksig_batch()` falls back to doing a single
verification for each signature.

The crash occurs because batch verification failed, but then all signatures
individually verified just fine.

That's because batch verification and single verification use a different
equation which means that there are sigs that can pass single verification
but fail batch verification.

Fixing this would require modding ed25519-donna which is not in scope for
this ticket, and will be soon deprecated in favor of arti and
ed25519-dalek, so my branch instead removes batch verification.

c1d96358d4 Use native timegm when available.
Continue having a tor_gmtime_impl() unit test so that we can detect
any problems in our replacement function; add a new test function to
make sure that gmtime<->timegm are a round-trip on now-ish times.

This is a fix for bug #40383, wherein we ran into trouble because
tor_timegm() does not believe that time_t should include a count of
leap seconds, but FreeBSD's gmtime believes that it should. This
disagreement meant that for a certain amount of time each day,
instead of calculating the most recent midnight, our voting-schedule
functions would calculate the second-most-recent midnight, and lead
to an assertion failure.

I am calling this a bugfix on 0.2.0.3-alpha when we first started
calculating our voting schedule in this way.

d12b16614d Prefer mmap()ed consensus files over cached_dir_t entries.
Cached_dir_t is a somewhat "legacy" kind of storage when used for
consensus documents, and it appears that there are cases when
changing our settings causes us to stop updating those entries.

This can cause trouble, as @arma found out in #40375, where he
changed his settings around, and consensus diff application got
messed up: consensus diffs were being _requested_ based on the
latest consensus, but were being (incorrectly) applied to a
consensus that was no longer the latest one.

This patch is a minimal fix for backporting purposes: it has Tor do
the same search when applying consensus diffs as we use to request
them. This should be sufficient for correct behavior.

There's a similar case in GETINFO handling; I've fixed that too.

f5acfe6723 Add a sandbox workaround for Glibc 2.33
This change permits the newfstatat() system call, and fixes issues

    //     newfstatat(fs, "", &st, AT_EMPTY_PATH)
// We can't detect this usage in particular, because "" is a pointer
// we don't control. And we can't just look for AT_EMPTY_PATH, since
// AT_EMPTY_PATH only has effect when the path string is empty.
    //
// So our only solution seems to be allowing all fstatat calls, which
// means that an attacker can stat() anything on the filesystem. That's
    // not a great solution, but I can't find a better one.

As of GCC 11.1.1, the compiler warns us about code like this:

         c;

and that's a good thing: we wouldn't want to "goto fail". But we
had an instance if this in circuituse.c, which was making our
compilation sad.

cf6e72b702 hs: Fix ADD_ONION with client authorization
Turns out that passing client authorization keys to ADD_ONION for v3 was
not working because we were not setting the "is_client_auth_enabled"
flag to true once the clients were configured. This lead to the
descriptor being encoded without the clients.

This patch removes that flag and instead adds an inline function that
can be used to check if a given service has client authorization
enabled.

This will be much less error prone of needing to keep in sync the client
list and a flag instead.

218f9f90fb guard: Don't check bridge transport name when selecting eligible guards
This is related to ticket #40360 which found this problem when a Bridge entry
with a transport name (let say obfs4) is set without a fingerprint:

  Bridge obfs4 <IP>:<PORT> cert=<...> iat-mode=0

(Notice, no fingerprint between PORT and "cert=")

Problem: commit 09c6d03246 added a check in
get_sampled_guard_for_bridge() that would return NULL if the selected bridge
did not have a valid transport name (that is the Bridge transport name that
corresponds to a ClientTransportPlugin).

Unfortuantely, this function is also used when selecting our eligible guards
which is done *before* the transport list is populated and so the added check
for the bridge<->transport name is querying an empty list of transports
resulting in always returning NULL.

For completion, the logic is: Pick eligible guards (use bridge(s) if need be)
then for those, initiate a connection to the pluggable transport proxy and
then populate the transport list once we've connected.

Back to get_sampled_guard_for_bridge(). As said earlier, it is used when
selecting our eligible guards in a way that prevents us from selecting
duplicates. In other words, if that function returns non-NULL, the selection
continues considering the bridge was sampled before. But if it returns NULL,
the relay is added to the eligible list.

This bug made it that our eligible guard list was populated with the *same*
bridge 3 times like so (remember no fingerprint):

[info] entry_guards_update_primary(): Primary entry guards have changed. New primary guard list is:
  [info] entry_guards_update_primary():   1/3: [bridge] ($0000000000000000000000000000000000000000)
  [info] entry_guards_update_primary():   2/3: [bridge] ($0000000000000000000000000000000000000000)
  [info] entry_guards_update_primary():   3/3: [bridge] ($0000000000000000000000000000000000000000)

When tor starts, it will find the bridge fingerprint by connecting to it and
will then update the primary guard list by calling
entry_guard_learned_bridge_identity() which then goes and update only 1 single
entry resulting in this list:

[debug] sampled_guards_update_consensus_presence(): Sampled guard [bridge] ($<FINGERPRINT>) is still listed.
[debug] sampled_guards_update_consensus_presence(): Sampled guard [bridge] ($0000000000000000000000000000000000000000) is still listed.
[debug] sampled_guards_update_consensus_presence(): Sampled guard [bridge] ($0000000000000000000000000000000000000000) is still listed.

And here lies the problem, now tor is stuck attempting to wait for a valid
descriptor for at least 2 guards where the second one is a bunch of zeroes and
thus tor will never fully bootstraps:

[info] I learned some more directory information, but not enough to build a
circuit: We're missing descriptors for 1/2 of our primary entry guards
(total microdescriptors: 6671/6703). That's ok. We will try to fetch missing
  descriptors soon.

Now, why passing the fingerprint then works? This is because the list of
guards contains 3 times the same bridge but they all have a fingerprint and so
the descriptor can be found and tor can bootstraps.

The solution here is to entirely remove the transport name check in
get_sampled_guard_for_bridge() since the transport_list is empty at that
point. That way, the eligible guard list only gets 1 entry, the bridge, and
can then go on to bootstrap properly.

It is OK to do so since when launching a bridge descriptor fetch, we validate
that the bridge transport name is OK and thus avoid connecting to a bridge
without a ClientTransportPlugin. If we wanted to keep the check in place, we
would need to populate the transport_list much earlier and this would require
a much bigger refactoring.

02816d6059 Try making our configure.ac script build with AC 2.70.
In versions <=2.69, according to the autoconf docs, AC_PROG_CC_C99
is needed with some compilers, if they require extra arguments to
build C99 programs. In versions >=2.70, AC_PROG_CC checks for these
compilers automatically, and so the AC_PROG_CC_C99 macro is
obsolete.

So, what can you do if you want your script to work right with both
autoconf versions? IIUC, neither including AC_PROG_CC_C99 macro nor
leaving it out will give you the right behavior with both versions.
It looks like you need to look at the autoconf version explicitly.

(Now, the autoconf manual implies that it's "against autoconf
philosophy" to look at the autoconf version rather than trying the
behavior to see if it works, but they don't actually tell you how to
detect recoverably at autoconf-time whether a macro is obsolete or
not, and I can't find a way to do that.)

So, is it safe to use m4_version_prereq, like I do here? It isn't
listed in the autoconf 2.63 manual (which is the oldest version we
support). But a mailing list message [1] (which added the
documentation back in 2008) implies that m4_version_prereq has been
there since "at least back to autoconf 2.59".

https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/autoconf-patches/2008-12/msg00025.html

So I think this will work.

I am basing this patch against Tor 0.3.5 since, if autoconf 2.70
becomes widespread before 0.3.5 is unsupported, we might need this
patch to continue 0.3.5 development. But I don't think we should
backport farther than 0.4.5 until/unless that actually happens.

This is part of a fix for #40355.

36768b5756 Fix glob processing on BSD systems. #40318
On Linux systems, glob automatically ignores the errors ENOENT and
ENOTDIR because they are expected during glob expansion. But BSD
systems do not ignore these, resulting in glob failing when globs
expand to invalid paths. This is fixed by adding a custom error
handler that ignores only these two errors and removing the
GLOB_ERR flag as it makes glob fail even if the error handler
ignores the error and is unnecessary as the error handler will
make glob fail on all other errors anyway.
